Gender inclusive design is an approach to development that learns from the experiences of women and girls in order to build inclusive, healthy, child friendly, climate resilient places that are socially and economically prosperous.
The report has been prepared to inform planning policy in London Borough of Tower Hamlets, but it is also part of an unfolding conversation which is becoming more nuanced as the thinking about gender inclusion in the built environment evolves. The ambition of this guidance goes further than addressing the limiting belief that design is a defensive strategy to protect women from violent men and presents an
expanded vision that considers the built environment as a language that can be an agent for change and
inclusivity.
