Mary is a Partner of Gustafson Porter + Bowman
Mary leads teams on a diverse range of projects at Gustafson Porter + Bowman and is responsible for the design direction and day-to-day management of the office, together with the other partners. Mary’s particular interest is in the integration of landscape and architecture, and the specialist role that landscape architects can play in the design of the public realm. Mary leads projects with complex client and consultant groups, and her experience as an architect and wider knowledge of the industry has allowed her to integrate landscape more successfully in built schemes and share knowledge. In London she is working at International Quarter London, Rathbone Square, and Luton Street in Westminster.
Mary lectures internationally and has been an external examiner at Chelsea College of Art and the Architectural Association, where she was also a tutor. From 2005 to 2009 Mary was a member of the AA Council, and she regularly contributes to 10×10 Drawing the City event for Article 25.
Born in California, Mary studied architecture at the University of Virginia and the Architectural Association in London. She is a qualified Architect in the UK and RIBA member. Mary initally worked for Foster + Partners, where she was one of the first female Associates. She subsequently worked at Walters + Cohen as a Director before joining Kathryn Gustafson and Neil Porter in 2002, becoming a Founding Partner of Gustafson Porter in 2011. From January 2017, Gustafson Porter became Gustafson Porter + Bowman in recognition of Mary’s contribution.
